On Oct. 15, kids were getting ready for Halloween by making bogus blood, It's not Snot, and fake wounds.

American Girl Rebecca

The newest American Girl, Rebecca, was featured on Sunday Oct. 4. The participants were able to learn about Rebecca Rubin, an eleven year old Jewish girl during 1914. The girls made a Tzedekah, a carousal horse and an American flag. They also tried rugelach and lemonade.

Magic Fairy Tea Party

On Sunday, Sept. 27, author Sandra McCone read part of her book, The Magic Fairy Tea Party, to 26 children. The children enjoyed tea and cookies, and also made fairy wings and wands.

The Ice Cream Social and Kids' Class Day was a lot fun on Sunday Sept 13. Children and parents enjoyed ice cream and the kids were able to learn about juggling, how to care for pets, hand painting, cupcake decorating, magic tricks, origami, caricature drawing and balloon scultpure.

American Girl Club - Kaya

On May 2, the American Girl's Club featured Kaya. Girls made a Native American pouch necklace, a drum, decorated a leather keychain, and played Kaya trivia.

Care Bears Family Activity Night

On Thursday, April 16 children had lots of fun making window clings, playing a match game, getting their face painted and winning cupcakes from a cupcake walk.

Fancy Nancy Soiree

Everyone was very "fancy" on Sun. Oct. 5 for the Fancy Nancy Soiree (that's a fancy word for party). The girls dressed in their fanciest clothes, made tiaras, decorated sunglasses, made fancy pencils with ribbons and feathers, frosted cupcakes, and had their face painted.

American Girls Club

Kit Kittredge was the featured American Girl on Sat. Sept. 27. Participants made crafts and played games from the 1934 era. There were games with marbles, paper boxes made from wall paper, decorated pencil holders made from cans, and oatmeal raisin cookies.

"Creepy Crawlies" from the Peoria Zoo

The Peoria Glen Oak Zoo brought several "creepy crawlies" to the library on Thursday, July 24. A Madagascar Giant Hissing Cockroach and a scorpion certainly got everyone's attention.

Monarch Butterflies

Rhonda Brady explained the life cycle of a Monarch butterflyon Thursday, July 17.
The Children's Room even had a butterfly "nursery." Many children were able to watch the caterpillars eat, make a chrysalis, and emerge as beautiful butterflies.

Legend of Sleepy Hollow

On June 17, the Elsenpeter puppets presented "The Lengend of Sleepy Hollow." Mr. Elsenpeter is a 5th generation puppeteer who uses hand crafted string puppets.

Make-It Take-it Craft Day

On June 5, kids had a great time making "buggy" headbands and grasshoppers using a plastic spoon, pipe cleaners, and felt. They also made "Don't Bug Me Doorhangers."

For a treat, they made butterflies using pretzels for wings and cheese sticks for the bodies.

Catch the Reading Bug

The summer reading program, "Catch the Reading Bug," started June 2, 2008 and will continue through July 26, 2008. The program is based on minutes read, so come to the library to get your reading log.

The children's program includes children ages 0-12. Children ages 0-5 need to read 1 hour for each prize, 6-9 need to read for 2 hours, and children 10-12 need 4 hours of reading for each prize. Get your picture taken and we'll put your photo on the butterfly

board.

American Girl Club

On Sat. Arpil 17, 25 girls and their mothers celebrated the newest American Girl, Julie Albright.

Julie's books take place in the 1974 era, so everyone had fun making macrame, friendship bracelets, tasting cheese fondue, constructing mini purses for the dolls, and learning trivia about Julie.

Fairies, Gnomes, & Trolls

We had lots of fun on April 17 for the family activity night. The children made fairy wings, gnome homes, played "Pin the Wart on the Troll," and made troll cookies.

Fun at "Dine with the Cat in the Hat"

We had a great time celebrating the 104th (March 2) birthday of Dr. Seuss!

On Thursday, Feb 28, 2008, children and their parents dined on Cat-shaped sandwiches, Kitty Krunchies (carrots), Meow Munchies (chips0, Cat Nipper (cheese crackers), Purrrfect Punch, and Catty-Cake birthday cake. Cjhildren were also able to make a "cat" hat, have their face painted by Galesburg High School Key members, listen to Dr. Seuss Stories, and have their pictures taken with "The Cat in the Hat."

Gingerbread House Activity Night

Over 100 houses were decorated on Dec. 13. At a cost of $5 per house, participants received a house made out of graham crackers, a tube of icing, and as much candy as they could fit on the house (and of course, some went in the mouth!)

Staff and volunteers used 23 boxes of graham crackers and 72 pounds of powdered sugar to assemble the houses and to fill the bags of icing. How much candy? Too much to count.

Everyone had a wonderful time making memories as well as houses.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Children and their parents had lots of fun with Thomas the Tank activities on Nov. 15. They made Thomas train engines out of boxes, put together puzzles of Thomas and made treat bags.

Magic Treehouse

On Thursday, October 18, Family Activity Night celebrated the Magic Treehouse series. 32 children and their parents made a "magic treehouse" from milk cartons and craft sticks, tried their skill using a catapult, played dinosaur bean bag toss, and made shields and princess hats.

Tales of a Quilter

On Friday, October 5, the Western Illinois Regional Touring Theatre presented Tales of a Quilter. The play is based on two books - "The Quiltmakers' Gift" and "The Quiltmaker's Journey" by Jeff Brumbeau.

Changes for Storytimes

Storytimes will begin the week of Oct. 1, 2007. In an effort to reach more children, we will include children 3 - 7 years old in storytimes. The storytimes will be held during the following days and times from Oct. 1 - Dec. 6.
Tuesdays at 6 PM

Thursdays at 6 PM
Our Toddler/Lapsit storytimes for children 18 - 36 months and a parent/caregiver will be at the regular time on Wednesdays at 10 AM.

Summer Reading Program "Get a Clue" ended July 28

The summer reading program concluded with 1045 children registered and 585 completed the 6 reading levels. A big thanks to our sponsors - Steak 'n' Shake, Discovery Depot Children's Museum, Pizza Hut, Lakeside Pool, Skate Palace, Uncle Billy's Bakery, Errands Unlimited, and the Friends of the Galesburg Library.

Our final program was a showing of "The Great Mouse Detective" at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday August 4. Names were drawn for the 3 grand prizes.

Space Challenger Program

Get a Clue about space was the program held on July 25. Children learned about astronauts' training and some of the equipment needed in space. Lee Ann Fujimoto encouraged children to "dream big" and never give up their dream.

On July 3, Darlene Stevens from the University of Illinois Extension showed children which foods were high in sugar. Children were able to sample homemade orange soda which is healthy as well as low in sugar.

Strawberry Shortcake

Lots of pink and red strawberries were seen at the library on March 15. Over 50 little girls (and yes, some boys) made hats, sticker books, participated in a Strawberry Shortcake Cake Walk, and, of course, munched on strawberry shortcake. Strawberry Shortcake herself made an appearance to the delight of everyone.

Harriet Tubman Visits Galesburg

On Mon. Feb. 19, Harriet Tubman told her audience how she become a conductor on the underground railroad and led 300 slaves to freedom. Harriet was portrayed by Kathryn Harris who is the director of the Abraham Lincoln Historical Library in Springfield.

Chocolate Activity Night

Children and adults had a lot of fun with chocolate on Thurs. Feb. 15 at the library.

Patty Christianson helped adults learn how to make chocolate "leaves." The children were able to make candy molds to take home.

Helping our Animal Friends

On January 18, the Prairland Animal Welfare Center came to the Galesburg Public Libray. They brought 2 cats and told the audience how to care for their pets. After the program, children were able to make a catnip toy.

Knitting/Crocheting Workshops

We have had lots of fun teaching and learning a new craft. Every Thursday during January approximately 25 students (young and old) came to practice their new skill from 6-8 PM.

2006 Gingerbread Houses

We had a record number of gingerbread houses this year - 100!
It took time and LOTS of powdered sugar (70 pounds to be exact), but everyone had a great time. So many beautiful and creative decorations were seen going home. Some houses even made it home before they were eaten.

Dora the Explorer

70 children were thrilled to see Dora on Thurs. Nov. 16. They were able to get their picture with Dora as well as make a purple Dora backpack, a Dora bracelet, Dora & Diego paper dolls, and even sample some of Boots' favorite monkey bread.
We are fortunate to have a great volunteer sorority to lend a helping hand with our activity nights.

Service Dogs at the Library

Three service dogs visited the library on Friday, November 3. Max the police dog, Igmar the guide dog, and Bonnie the therapy dog showed off their talents. Their owners were happy to tell how valuable their dogs are to them.

An "Awful" celebration to "The Awful End"

A Series of Unfortunate Events concluded with the 13th and last book, The Awful End, on Friday, October 13. To commemorate this "awful" ending, we had a famly activity night on Thursday Oct. 19. Several won books as doorprizes, and all had a "terrible" time with "miserable masquerade," "boring bingo," and "terrible trivia."

Snakeman

Gary Liesen, a.k.a. Snakeman visited the library on Oct. 16. He brought several of his "friends." Gary presented five beautiful snakes in a very non-threatening manner. Everyone was able to hold the snakes if they wanted.

American Girls Featuring Kirsten

American Girl Club met September 23. Girls and their moms had a great time making crafts of pioneer days. They made a handkerchief doll, real butter , straw horse toy, and decorated a graham cracker to look like a quilt square.

Earth Day Family Activities

The Galesburg Public Library celebrated Earth Day on Thursday, April 20. Children made Earth sun catchers, wreaths, and Circle of the Earth bracelets. Kathy Boydstun from Knox Co. Farm Bureau explained recycling and showed children how important it is.

Pipeline - Music of the Pipe

The Galesburg Public Library was really dancing to the beat of a different drmmer - several drummers in fact! Over 100 participants, old and young alike, enjoyed the music performed by 4 young men from the Western Illinois Regional Touring Theatre on Monday April 10. Fantastic drumming on PVC pipes, LOTS of energy, and enthusiasm were demonstrated in this great performance.
